October 2011 - October plantings in newly cleared area

This is a newly cleared area close to the Conservation Covenant bush where the VUW students, as well as our regular members, planted in October 2011. This area was cleared after the 2003 fire, and fully planted at that time, but the gorse got away on us and overwhelmed most of the planted trees. This year (2011) we tackled it again with careful clearing and spot spraying, revealing that a number of good size native trees had indeed survived. Now those ones are sheltering the new seedlings of 2011. Spot spraying will be continued for 2 years this time round, to prevent gorse regrowing. (Look carefully and see the whole process - bits of dead gorse lying around having been cut and sprayed; areas where spring grass has come up, plus a few gorse shoots trying to outwit us; the good-sized native survivors, mostly coprosma sp. and mahoe; and the new seedlings with their hare protectors on.)
